Serbian Novak Djokovic was the fourth player to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. He will be making his third successive appearance (4-3) at the prestigious circuit climax.
2009 In Review
Djokovic, who has been in the Top 4 of the South African Airways ATP Rankings since 7 July 2007, has won five ATP World Tour titles this year from an ATP World Tour-best 10 finals. He has also compiled the highest match-wins record on tour this season and goes into the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals with a 76-18 mark.
The 22 year old won his first title of the season at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships (d. Ferrer) in February. He finished runner-up at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami (l. to Murray), before finishing runner-up at two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments — the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters and Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome (l. to Nadal both times).
He bounced back from the final defeats by winning his inaugural hometown tournament at the Serbia Open 2009 (d. Kubot) before also advancing to the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open semi-finals in Madrid, where he squandered three match points against Rafael Nadal in a record four-hour and three-minute marathon.
Djokovic suffered his earliest loss in four years at Roland Garros, when he fell in the third round (l. to Kohlschreiber). On grass, he advanced to the Gerry Weber Open final in Halle and the quarter-finals at The Championships, Wimbledon (l. to Haas both times).
Prior to teaming up with former ATP pro Todd Martin before the US Open, Djokovic was beaten in his seventh ATP World Tour final this year at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati (l. to Federer).
Following a semi-final showing at the US Open (l. to Federer), Djokovic lit up the ATP World Tour in the autumn, winning three titles from four tournaments with victory at the China Open (d. Cilic) in Beijing, the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel (d. Federer) and the BNP Paribas Masters (d. Monfils) in Paris.
Finals History
Djokovic secured his qualification for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in September.
The Monte-Carlo resident captured the 2008 title in Shanghai, winning four of his five matches at the Qi Zhong Stadium. He beat Nikolay Davydenko 6-1, 7-5 in the final.
On his debut in 2007, he failed to win any of his three round robin matches.
